Housing has become too large, expensive and complicated, and many people are living in a home that is, frankly, too much for their needs.

We do things differently

Livability

  • A simple, universally functional space that can house singles, couples, roommates, and many small families
  • The floor plan and interior fixtures are flexible and adaptable to accommodate the mobility-challenged

Simplicity

  • Designed with ease of maintenance as a primary consideration
  • Materials are chosen based on quality and durability, as well as ease of replacement
  • Less complex means less things to go wrong that need repair
  • Can be installed nearly anywhere in the world

Speed

  • We are experienced designers and are familiar with development bylaws and building codes. We can get the permitting approvals without needing a 3rd party, taking that very complex issue off of your hands
  • Innovative engineering allows us to minimize the impact on the property (minimal excavation)
  • Careful design of components and construction sequencing allows for much of the construction work to occur off-site so that on-site assembly can be done extremely fast compared to conventional construction
  • We can provide access to financing for your project so it may not be necessary to acquire bank financing

Cost

  • Keeping the construction cost as low as possible is our single most important priority
  • Careful planning of the construction process reduces labour costs significantly, which can comprise 70% of the overall cost of a conventional building project
  • We control as much of the supply chain as we can, and work hard to develop strategic partnerships with other suppliers in order to get the best material pricing that's available. Our key materials are sourced in Canada.

Durability

  • Our goal is to build dwellings that last 100 years, and that can be installed virtually anywhere in the world
  • Every material we choose is subjected to careful analysis and we choose materials that provide the best balanced outcome:
    • Is it susceptible to water/pest damage?
    • Is it harmful to the environment?
    • Can it be recycled or reused?
    • Is it easy to install, even on remote sites?
    • Is it easy to maintain?
    • Does it help with energy efficiency?
    • Is it cost-effective?

Efficiency

  • Our dwellings are designed using Passive House principles, one of the most stringent building energy-efficiency certifications available
  • Triple-paned windows and full insulation wrap around exterior of structure, with continuous air barrier (no drafts) mean no cold spots

Flexibility

  • Most of our units are designed to be used as backyard suites, with or without a garage. Can be for extended family, rental income, ageing in place, office. They can also serve as perfect little cottages on recreational properties, and for co-housing or affordable housing developments.
  • No interior bearing walls means that the floor plan can be very flexible
  • Standardized framing of exterior walls on both levels allows for multiple additional window and door placements &/or configurations
  • The roof design is flexible and can be adapted to local development requirements
  • The optional glass enclosure for balcony is fully retractable

Environmental Friendliness

  • All materials are carefully assessed for their impact on ozone depletion and global warming potential
  • Construction methods are designed to minimize the impact on the building site
  • The buildings are designed to be almost fully recyclable at the end of their life, there is very little that cannot be easily disassembled and reclaimed for use
  • The Passive House principle is based on minimizing dependence on non-renewable fuel resources, and is intended to lead to a Net-Zero energy model
  • These dwellings can be used for off-grid properties

Homes are too expensive and complicated, and something needs to change.

  1. The cost of building new housing is very high and the process of building new housing is very complex. The smaller the dwelling, the higher the relative cost & complexity per square foot.

  2. Fewer and fewer people are able to afford housing that's of a decent quality and that is suitable for their needs

  3. More and more people are becoming house-poor, their housing expenses are taking too much of their income

  4. House construction is becoming more and more complex, it takes longer to build as time goes by, and it requires highly-trained specialists to build it.

  5. The 'sandwich generation' is facing the challenge of caring for their elderly parents in a way that still allows them as much freedom and quality-of-life as possible, as well as helping their grown children get off to a good start with their first job. Sometimes a multi-generational living arrangement is the best answer, but it's not easy to find a suitable way to do that.

  6. The housing and financial markets are currently volatile and unpredictable, changing significantly month-to-month. The time it takes to properly plan, arrange financing, purchase materials, and build conventionally means that you actually have very little control over what a build will actually cost. The answer is to try to complete it all as quickly as you can, but a bad plan and rushed execution will most often lead to even higher costs, short-term and long-term.
